In all of my professional reading on leadership, one of the main messages is: Realationships, relationships, relationships.
It is so important to be aware of how we interact with others. This is a skill that I have been working on for some time now. I have not always had the ability to speak to others with consideration that I use now. I have come to learn that we must truly be respectful of others.
I never assume that someone is not working hard enough, giving their best or operating with malice. I have learned that all of us have our own stories, we bring our own baggage and it is wise to consider that others may be struggling for one reason or another.
One of the first things I do now is to smile and ask someone how they are before I hit them with a request or piece of information. I have found that this simple approach goes a long way.
Don't assume that others are lazy or incompetent. Assume they know what they are doing, and if they need assistance or understanding, provide that to them.
Approach others with a smile and a kind word.
